Eight Killed in Malang Landslide

At least eight people were killed in a landslide in Pandansari Village, Ngantang Sub-district, Malang District, East Java, on Sunday. Spokesperson of the Indonesian Red Cross of Malang Aprilianto said according to the report, at least 16 people were buried in the landslide, while eight of them, sand miners were killed.
"Two of the dead victims had not been evacuated," Aprilianto said here Sunday.
The landslide broke out at a road connecting Pandansari Village, Ngantang Sub-district with Pondok Agung Village, Kasembon Sub-district. The local authority could not confirm the cause of the landslide as the PMI team is still on their way to the site of the accident for the evacuation.
Meanwhile, head of Code and Telecommunications of the local administration Bagio said the area where the accident took place was prone to landslides as it was located on a slop. However, the authority could not contact the field personnel as because of the lack of communications network there, Bagio said.
