Indonesia Remains Haven for Terrorists
Indonesia remains a haven for terrorists, National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT) Chief Ansyaad Mbai said in a working meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives’ (DPR) on Monday. He said a number of factors including lack of law enforcement has contributed to flourishing terrorism in the country.
"To deal with terrorism we have to raise law enforcement, because our legal practice is still weak, compared to that in other countries, and therefore Indonesia remains a haven for terrorists," Ansyaad said.
He pointed out that two terrorist leaders from Malaysia namely Azahari and Noordin M Top were able to hide in Indonesia but they eventually were killed because of increased enforcement of the law.
"Azahari and Noordin M Top made Indonesia their favorite hideout because in Malaysia they would be arrested immediately if they lectured, engage in military training, or used military uniforms and signs. But in Indonesia if our neighbors committed a violence we were far too lenient and that’s why they had a perfect place to hide in this country," he said.
Ansyaad explained that so far 600 terrorists had been arrested and 500 of whom faced the law. But he added that the law was not strong or firm enough to reduce the terrorism here.
