Total Workforce in Indonesia Reaches 119.4 Million


The total workforce in Indonesia in February reached 119.4 million or up by around 2.9 million from 116.5 million in August 2010, according to the National Statistics Agency (BPS).
"The number is up by 3.4 million from 116 million in February 2010," BPS chief Rusman Heriawan said here on Thursday. He said the working population in Indonesia in February 2011 reached 111.3 million or rose by around 3.1 million compared to 108.2 million in August 2010.
"The number is up 3.9 million from 107.4 million in February 2010," he said. Rusman meanwhile said the number of unemployed in the country reached 8.12 million, down by 470,000 from 8.59 million in February 2010.
"The rate of open unemployment in February 2011 reached 6.8 percent of the total workforce, down from 7.14 percent in August 2010 and 7.41 percent in February 2010," he said.


In the past one year period or February 2010 to February 2011, the number of workers in almost all sectors rose except in the agricultural and transportation sectors that dropped respectively by 360,000 or 0.84 percent and 240,000 or 4.12 percent.
"The agricultural, trade, public service and industrial sectors respectively are the biggest recipients of workers in February 2011," he said.
He stated in February 2011 the number of people working as laborers or employees reached 34.5 millions or 31.01 and who were self-employed with non-permanent laborers 21.3 millions or 19.15 percent, fully self-employed 21.1 millions or 19.01 percent.
In terms of working hours, he said. 77.1 million people or 69.28 percent work above 35 hours a week and 1.4 million work less than eight hours or 1.23 percent.
Workers with elementary education still dominate reaching 55.1 million or 49.53 percent, with diplomas 3.3 million or 2.98 percent and university graduates 5.5 million or 4.98 percent.
